I wish I could use the entire chapter for a devotional but that is not possible. There is so, so much. The disciple ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. Wouldn't that have been some teaching session. They said," Lord, teach us to pray..." After he share the prayer outline we call the Lord's Prayer then he went into an illustration of how we should be persistent in our prayer. He said," Keep on asking, Keep on seeking, Keep on Knocking. Everyone who asks , receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. I have found this to be true. Then here is the biggy: So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. Have you asked for the Holy Spirit?

You are aware I am just skimming through the chapters and in most cases bringing out what impresses me. In this chapter Jesus sends out 70 or 72 men. I would very much like to have seen that. We can't get very men in church today to do much of anything and certainty not go out visiting. When I was pastoring in Hitchcock we had a regularly schedule visitation night and it was Tuesday. It ended up that only two of us would go out visiting but it was one of the most exhilarating times. What joy and victory it brought to us. Why don't people visit anymore?
As we continue day-by-day in Luke we come to chapter nine in which he send out the twelve disciples and gives them power and authority to cast out demons and to heal diseases. Did you know that even Judas did that. And then we have the feeding of the 5000 men plus women and children. Answer this: why were there twelve baskets of leftovers?
Then the verbal test. Jesus ask,"who do people say I am?" Then he asked them," But who do you say I am?" Then Peter replied, " You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God." Who do you say Jesus Christ is? If he is the anointed One, the Son of God, do you truly follow Him? There is so much in each chapter of Luke and I hope you are reading and absorbing these eternal truths. We see in this chapter the women who followed Jesus. Then the incredible parable of the farmer scattering seed. Do you he is talking about three kinds of Christians. Then the parable of the lamp. Jesus says," To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given." Next he says this," My mother and my brothers are those who hear God's word and obey it." Next Jesus calms the storm. He does that even in our lives if we let him. And one more thing: Jesus cast out the legion of demons in a man. Then Jesus sent him home and said," Go back to your family and tell them everything God has done for you."
Listen; Learn; Obey: and Do it! In chapter seven Jesus encounters a Roman officer who is interceding for one of his slaves. After a conversation with Jesus, Jesus says of this man," I tell you, I haven't seen faith like this in all of Israel." Now we are talking about a pagan man coming to Jesus and believing that all Jesus had to do was speak it and the slave would be healed. Then we see Jesus interrupting a funeral service to raise a widow's son. Jesus just does those kind of things. Heals a slave. Raises a dead to life.
One more thing: listen to what He says of John the Baptist," I tell you, of all who ever lived, none is greater than John, Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is." He is talking about you. |
